Sarah in 2010
Many of you ask what I am up to, my current areas of interest, where I am traveling, and so on. So I thought I would let you know my broad strategies and activities for 2010. Please check the website pages for more details (like recent clients or masterclasses) and the calendar on this website to check my availability.
Passions and interests
- I'm curious about the dynamics of large scale change, how it happens (or doesn't) and what we can do to create the positive changes we desire – at scale. This builds on my specialist topic of implementing and spreading good practice.
- As always I feel my work is only as useful as it is practical so I continue to build on project work in these topics; I am particularly interested in working with a few organisations who may be interested in working on implementing widespread, deeply embedded spread of existing ideas, rather than the patchwork of implementation that so often occurs. I have some new and radical methods to effect this and experiences to share from my work in a number of countries. My currently agreed 2010 projects range from working within one large hospital through to supporting and implementing Regional and National changes in a number of countries. These are delivered through workshop series, data analysis, coaching, webinars, documentation reviews and on the ground facilitation.
- Team development - I'm interested in how we can work best together at all levels. I use a number of tools and techniques, including well known questionnaires and instruments for which I am qualified to use. This usually means understanding how we work individually and then finding ways to deliver great performance as a team. I believe teamwork is part of the business case for change.
- Harnessing the virtual experience; thinking two steps ahead, this links to many of my passions and I am working on a variety of training programs, frameworks, interventions and models - all of which aim to enhance the experience for both staff and patients. I'm keen to work with small teams and larger organisations that are prepared to make the leap to become world leaders in using technology to improve the content, the process and - to be ambitious - the total delivery - of care.
- Training the Trainer is a specialty that I am good at and enjoy. I'm interested in finding ways to scale up skills and to renew enthusiasm and inspire others. I like to do this using theory as well as very practical methods and tools. I'm particularly keen to create sustainable intervention and as such often use the training kits developed for this purpose (for further information ») I have video cameras and TVs and can develop a range of detailed training sessions for trainers to develop their skills.
- Engaging minority and/or disadvantaged groups is often challenging for improvement initiatives and I believe often because we approach with inappropriate methods and processes. I'd like to focus more of my time and skills on working in this area and in partnering with others to discover effective ways to make a difference.
- My current writing projects include a 3rd book in the series about spreading good practice and scaling up improvement. This will be available in 2010. A number of papers are underway on topics ranging from leadership, large scale change, return on investment of improvement projects etc. I enjoy writing with others so if you'd like to share and collaborate please get in touch.
- Volunteering and donating my time is something that I have always done and usually for registered charities who may like facilitation for a Board away-day etc. If you would like a facilitated session then please contact me. Please see who we support page for more details.
Where will I be in 2010?
- Thanks to some really helpful colleagues in many countries I have been able to reduce my travel time, driving miles and flying hours by combining visits when in one country and also using video conferencing. Let’s continue to work this way.
- In 2010 my European travel plans include trips to the Netherlands, Denmark and to Sweden. Both the West Coast and East Coast USA are on my travel agenda in 2010. I shall also be in Canada a number of times (West, Central and East). If you are from those areas and would like to know how to combine my existing trip with your requirements, then please contact me.
- I have a number of project related commitments in the UK during 2010 as well as some one off events. I am aiming to spend at least 70% of working time
